Gourd is known as "Mate" in Peru. This art is one of the oldest and most traditional example of Peruvian handicraft, due to the weather conditions in the Andes makes the gourd shell hard, and it is similar to wood.
This beautiful design has been hand - carved and burn is a process similar to wood burning, the pressure and the time of application creates the different shades of colors (shades of brown, black and gray) .
